A project holds the protocols, batches and samples for one line of work. To create one, open Projects, tap the + at the top right, name it after the work and tap Create project. Everything else on the form is optional.
In this guide you will learn how to:
- Open the New project form
- Name the project
- Create it and open it
- See what the project page asks for next

Before you start
- Sign in at app.tinysamples.com on your phone or your computer. The name of your lab is at the top left of every screen.
- You need nothing else. A project is the first thing a lab makes, and every protocol, batch and sample lives inside one.
How to create a project
A project needs only a name. Everything else on the form is optional.
Tap Projects in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
Tap the + at the top right. Its label is New project.
Type a name in Name. Name it after the work, not the date, so it still makes sense in a year.
Tap Create project. You go back to the Projects list, and the new project is at the top, marked No samples yet.
Tap the project to open it. You see Team, Protocols and History, and under Batches a short list: write the protocol, create the first batch, and bring in your team, which is optional. The batch step is locked until a protocol is published.
What each part of the form does
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Name | The only part you need to fill in. |
| Colour | Helps you tell projects apart in the list. |
| Symbol | Helps you tell projects apart in the list. |
| Target | Optional. |
| Due | Optional. It says None until you set a date. |
| Team | Optional. It starts as Just you. |
| Description | Optional. A line about the aims or who you work with. |
Leave the optional parts as they are for now. You can change any of them later: open the project, tap the three dots at the top right (Project options), then Edit project.
Common questions
- Can I change a project’s name later?
- Yes. Open the project, tap the three dots at the top right (Project options), then Edit project.
- Do I need a project before I can register samples?
- Yes. A sample lives in a batch, a batch follows a protocol, and a protocol lives in a project. The first project comes first.
What to do next
- Build your first protocolHow to build a protocol in tinysamples: name it, add a step, add a value for the step to record and publish it so batches can follow it. One step that records one value is enough.
- How tinysamples is organisedHow the pieces of tinysamples fit together: a lab holds projects, a project holds protocols and batches, a batch holds samples, and every step logged becomes an entry in a sample’s history.
